Ink Cartridge Design Evoloves As Printers Change
Ink Cartridge Design Evoloves As Printers Change: "There was a time, long ago that printers had ribbons and used dot matrix printing to create tiny dots that, when looked at, were readable. Sometimes they were BARELY readable, however. Changing ribbons and printing wheels to change type face was a chore"

The Future... Faster!
Why is it that the United States market is NOT the leader in cell phone use, broadband Internet, high definition television, or other technologies that we invented?
We lead the world in technology, but fall behind in just about anything that REGULATED. We're living with grossly outdated laws, and way too much regulation to foster competition.
I can't say I agree with all the motives of the "future... faster" web site, and some of the stuff is dated. But I think it's a good idea to take a few minutes and review it (the TV ads were great, and maybe the most informative part of the site)

A Marketing Plan For Life
These days, I spend most of my time marketing people and books.
I still own an imaging industry business, and have so many friends in the industry, that I'm still going to do more imaging ventures soon.
In the mean time, I think you can get some great ideas from watching how we promote authors and books. (I know I've picked up a lot of education this way).
Here's my latest effort.. a blog about a promotion we're planning for a great book called A Marketing Plan For Life. The author is Robert Michael Fried, who has done some great marketing on his own, and used the process in this book to make a change in his own life.
I think the book is a must read.. but whether you read that or not, take a look at how I'm using these 12 steps in the promotion of his book on Amazon.

WSJ.com - Digital Snaps in a Snap
WSJ.com - Digital Snaps in a Snap: "Now popping up not just in hospitals, but also fast-food joints, cruise ships and other high-traffic spots, photo kiosks have become the newest battleground in the digital-photo printing wars. And as more players seek to grab a bigger share of the $3.5 billion annual U.S. digital photo-printing market, companies such as Sony, Eastman Kodak Co., Fuji Photo Film Co. and Pixel Magic Imaging Inc. are racing to make the kiosks nearly as ubiquitous as automated-teller machines.
Prices for the kiosks are also plunging, fostering the spread of the machines. The average list price of a photo kiosk from Lucidiom Inc. is $3,900 today, down from $5,500 last year, says Stephen Giordano, chief executive of the closely held Vienna, Va., company. Retailers typically buy the machines, and keep the revenue from prints. Some kiosk makers now also offer lease options, where retailers pay a monthly fee and share the revenue from consumers.
The fact that kiosks are getting smaller and faster is heightening their appeal to non-photo retailers. Kodak's latest photo kiosks, for instance, can produce a standard 4-by-6-inch image in just four seconds, down from 11 seconds just a few months ago. In addition to printing snaps from digital cameras, the kiosks can often also print images from camera phones, scan old film photos onto a compact disc, download pictures from a digital memory card onto a CD, and make prints from a CD.
Sony is placing kiosks in hospitals and craft stores that specialize in scrapbook-making. Closely held Pixel Magic has kiosks sailing on Carnival Corp. cruise ships. Kodak has installed kiosks at Walt Disney Co.'s amusement parks, McDonald's Corp. restaurants in Hong Kong, and dispatches a traveling fleet to sporting events such as the Olympic"

WSJ.com - H-P to Unveil Major Restructuring
WSJ.com - H-P to Unveil Major Restructuring: "Wall Street analysts are projecting large cost cuts at H-P, involving anywhere from 5,000 to 25,000 layoffs from the company's 150,000-person work force. Toni Sacconaghi, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., last month predicted job cuts of 7,500 to 15,000 employees, which would garner annual savings of $750 million to $1.5 billion.
H-P's enterprise computing business and services business, which are less profitable than some rivals, appear particularly exposed to any job cuts. In addition, Mr. Sacconaghi wrote in a research report, Mr. Hurd could eliminate some costs by shutting down nonessential research-and-development projects, cutting the advertising budget and streamlining the sales force.
In a research note yesterday, Cindy Shaw, an analyst at Moors & Cabot, suggested H-P could cut as many as 25,000 jobs early next week."

WSJ.com - Printer, Copier Firms Battle for Businesses To Convert to Color

WSJ.com - Printer, Copier Firms Battle for Businesses To Convert to Color: "Sales of monochrome laser printers, the workhorses that many businesses own, peaked in the U.S. in 1998 and have stagnated despite lower prices, according to research firm Gartner Inc. Making color a standard feature in the office -- as it is in the home, on low-end ink-jet printers -- is seen as an attractive way to wring new growth from the mature, $52 billion printer market."

CRN | Breaking News | HP Execs Issue Challenge To Printer Rivals: "Vyomesh Joshi, executive president of HP's Imaging and Printing Personal Systems Group, had some harsher words for Dell, one of the company's more determined competitors in the printer arena. In a roundtable discussion at the conference on Tuesday, he said Dell isn't a viable HP competitor in printers because the Round Rock, Texas-based hardware vendor still must prove it can make money in that part of its business.
'I believe you're in business when you make money,' Joshi said. 'Dell doesn't make money [in printers]. Shareholders will not tolerate if you're not making your average profits. Dell has to prove [itself] to have a viable, long-term printing business.'"

ContentBiz.com : practical news and Case Studies for publishers and aggregators selling and syndicating text-content online.
These guys are way off base.
They contend that you can't market with blogs because "probably most blogs don't"
Most web sites don't market well.. most email sent does not result in a sale.. and most people (and business) think little of marketing.
Then.. the post an excellent case study about a great response to blog marketing.
ContentBiz.com : practical news and Case Studies for publishers and aggregators selling and syndicating text-content online.: "CHALLENGE: A little over two years ago, John Mudd quit his job in book publicity to try his hand at selling waterfront vacation homes worth an average $700,000 in Florida.
He quickly learned the Web was mission critical.
'People are more interested in the property than they are in the realtor. About 80% of home buyers go online long in advance of even looking at real estate in a certain area. They'll visit something like 20 different realtor Web sites and then they'll go with the first realtor who calls them back.'
Mudd's Web site had to show up high in search engine results to get visitors, plus it had to convert clicks into hand-raising prospects he could call on.
But, his budget was small -- less than $1000 -- and competition for real estate-related search visibility was incredibly fierce.
CAMPAIGN: Mudd knew Google's crawlers were infamous for paying more attention to blogs than they did to most traditional Web sites.
'I had a blog when I was in PR and I noticed the blog ended up pretty high in Google for terms like 'Media Relations.' Pretty much anything I'd post would end up in the top five rankings for a while.'
Tactic #1. Seed your blog posts with keywords
Each separate entry you post to a blog will be reviewed on its own by search engines. If that individual entry contains keywords your prospects are searching for, the search engine may include a link to that particular post in its results.
This means you can't just post keywords as part of your overall blog name or template and count on that to do much for you. You need to consider what key terms are critical to your audience, and include them in your postings.
However, you can only rank well a few times for a particu"

Don't bank on HP's source of difficulty
"HP didn't really do consumers. The opportunity came with the laser printer - a complex, expensive device only corporate customers could afford. HP focused its capacity on making printers that were robust, reliable and technically sweet. The result was the Laserjet, one of the greatest electronics products of all time. "

Can Anyone Save HP?
Article from Business Week
Yahoo! News - Can Anyone Save HP?
"Even HP's gilded $24 billion printing business, viewed by many as the company's savior, faces a rising number of challenges. Since Dell jumped into the market in early 2003, it has quickly picked up market share in inkjet models, the low end of the business. During the first three quarters of 2004, Dell accounted for 13% of inkjet sales in the U.S., according to IDC. While still a fraction of HP's market share, it presents a troubling trend. A growing base of Dell printers means it could eat into HP's lucrative business of selling ink refills to existing customers. "Dell is on the radar. It's a big long-term issue for Hewlett-Packard," says Ken Smith, a portfolio manager at institutional investor Munder Capital. "

What ends up happening is, yes, maybe 20% of the pictures you capture are printed, but the number of pictures you capture is much, much higher than you ever had with film, so that 20% scales up to be similar to a film volume at the height of film use. What about these little retail stores?
I just sent this to a few thousand friends:
Can I ask your opinion?
We've talked before about the future of the IMAGING SUPPLIES INDUSTRY... today I'm researching another area of our industry and I could use your help.
I'm researching RETAIL IMAGING SUPPLIES STORES that sell only imaging supplies. I'm sure you've seen them. Mostly franchises like "Rapid Refill", "Cartridge World", or "Island InkJet"
I'd like to know what you know and think about these questions..
1. Are these stores a significant part of your market?
2. Does the franchise model work?
3. Will retail stores market share keep growing?
4. Any data, comments, rumors, ideas about this topic?
I really want to know what you think about this. Please REPLY and send me a quick note.
I'll be sure to share the results with you.
Thank you for your help.

PS. Marketing continues to make a huge difference to companies in the imaging products industry. This year, I'm going to share some ideas I've learned from other industries that drastically increase results.
I look forward to talking with you again soon.

Test-Driving the $99 iPod
Test-Driving the $99 iPod: "yesterday, at the annual MacWorld exposition in San Francisco, Apple rolled out a new addition to the iPod line that will make that task much harder. It's a tiny $99 music player called the iPod Shuffle that Apple hopes will tempt millions of lower-budget music fans to join the iPod legions when it hits store shelves later this month."

What a Difference a Day Makes
It was less then 24 hours back that I lamented about my high number Alexa ranking.
But now I'm at 445,737. It's like they removed a zero overnight.
It must be the new blog. Guess the old one didn't count.
Nasty OEM tricks. Region coding will shut down printers
HP printer cartridge coding
"Now, there are signs that manufacturers feel that this kind of globalization has gone too far. H-P has quietly begun implementing 'region coding' for its highly lucrative print cartridges for some of its newest printers sold in Europe. Try putting a printer cartridge bought in the U.S. into a new H-P printer configured to use cartridges purchased in Europe and it won't work. Software in the printer determines the origin of the ink cartridge and whether it will accept it"

I'm in the top 5,000,000!
Maybe I should write a little bit more often
My Alexa ranking puts me up to 4,973,385 of all the web sites it knows about.
Not exactly an accomplishment.. more of a challenge to post a lot more great content.. I accept the challenge.
